Welcome
Are you ready for change in your life?
My name is James. I am a therapist offering person-centred psychotherapeutic counselling, online and in-person in Exeter.
I hold a degree level Diploma in Person-centred Psychotherapeutic Counselling, as well as a masters in philosophy and a graduate certificate in psychology, both of which inform my therapeutic approach.
If you want to make grow and make changes to yourself and your life then I can offer you the support you need in order to flourish into your full self.
I practice person-centred psychotherapeutic counselling, offering myself as a warm, genuine and empathetic companion to my clients.
You can read about my approach here. However, in short, I start from my committed belief that you, as a human being, are already enough and my work is to engage in a warm and supportive dialogue, which is empathetic and free of judgement. In this context we are together able to identify and understand your patterns of thought, feeling and behaviour, and process difficult emotions.
Over time you will be able to bring about change where needed. In general, the outcome is an increase in self-knowledge and self-appreciation, and an enhanced ability to act effectively to bring joy into your life.
People come to therapy for many reasons. You might be experiencing severe feelings of depression, anxiety, suicidality, or desire to self-harm. Perhaps past traumas continue to haunt your life today. You may be looking for support to come through these experiences into a happier, fuller life.
Or perhaps you are feeling lost, alone, uncertain, or are just interested to see what therapy could offer you.
I love my work, and getting to know the people I work with, even though the experience we share might be painful and hard.
Whatever your reason for being on this page, if you want make changes to yourself and your life, I am here to help.
What I offer
I offer therapy online, using Zoom, and in-person in Exeter, at the County Chiropractic and Wellness Centre.
I offer a free, no obligation, trial session for you to get a feel for whether you would like to work with me.
I then offer 60 minute sessions at a cost of £60. (I have a couple of concessionary spots available if you are able to be flexible on timings).
About me
I am in my later 30s, and live in Exeter, Devon. I am the lucky father of two young – Robyn and Erin – children and the owner of one demanding but loveable cat. I enjoy walks on Dartmoor, music festivals, trips to London to see friends and family. I have an interest in meditation and Eastern spiritual traditions and am also currently studying psychedelic assisted psychotherapy at Exeter University.
After completing several initial counselling courses I have undertaken three years of intensive training at the Metanoia Institute, London, studying under some of the leading names in the field. I hold a degree level Diploma in Person-centred Psychotherapeutic Counselling and have individual membership of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I am committed to ethical and anti-discriminatory practice and adhere to BACP’s ethical codes.
Having previously worked as a teacher in inner-city London schools I came to train in person-centred therapy when my own experience of receiving person-centred therapy led me to some revolutionary changes in my ways of understanding myself and my world. I am passionate about the approach and sharing it with others.
